In both small and large groups children are encouraged to expand their vocabulary, speaking with confidence and control exploring the meanings and sounds of new words.
Children are helped to understand that print carries meaning and in German is read from left to right and from top to bottom. Children are offered the opportunity to become aware of languages and alphabets other than German or English. Sensitivity is shown to the needs of children for whom German is an additional language.
Opportunities are given to to explore the structure of and take pleasure in stories, rhymes and songs, to listen with enjoyment and to create their own variations.
Children are encouraged to attempt 'writing', and to recognise their own names and familiar words.
